Vibrant “Water Splashing Festival” of the Lao Ethnic People in Dien Bien
Preserving a Unique Lao Tradition in Dien Bien
From April 12 to 13, in Na Sang 1 Village, Nua Ngam Commune, Dien Bien District, the Bun Huot Nam – Water Splashing Festival will take place.
This traditional celebration showcases the distinctive cultural identity of the Lao ethnic community in northern Vietnam.
The festival expresses wishes for favorable weather, good harvests, and happiness in the coming year.
It is one of the most important events for the Lao community, blending faith, gratitude, and joy.

A Cultural Heritage of National Significance
The Lao people are one of 19 ethnic groups living in Dien Bien province.
Their Water Splashing Festival is among the most vibrant and symbolic traditions.
In 2017, the Bun Huot Nam Festival in Nua Ngam Commune was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
For the Lao people, splashing water symbolizes washing away misfortune and welcoming blessings.
It is also a time to honor ancestors, deities, and village founders.
