Typhoon Kalmaegi Slams Vietnam’s Central Highlands, Causing Floods and Blackouts

Rescue teams work through the night as widespread damage hits homes, roads, and power lines.

Đắk Lắk, Gia Lai — November 7:
Typhoon Kalmaegi (Storm No. 13) swept through eastern Đắk Lắk and Gia Lai on November 6. The storm caused widespread destruction across coastal and lowland areas. Winds reached level 10–11, with gusts above level 12. Heavy rain followed, tearing roofs off hundreds of homes and flooding many roads.

Sông Cầu Severely Affected

Local officials reported Sông Cầu ward as the worst-hit area. Neighborhoods along the Tam Giang River were submerged under 1–1.5 meters of water. Rising tides in the evening isolated four households in An Bình Đông. Some residents climbed onto furniture and rooftops, waiting for rescue teams.

Emergency units used boats to reach stranded families. Rescuers worked through the night to clear debris and open blocked routes.

Widespread Damage and Power Loss

In central Sông Cầu, many buildings suffered severe structural damage. Power poles and trees collapsed, cutting electricity across large areas. Police and soldiers were deployed to remove fallen trees and restore traffic flow. Safety checks continued throughout the night to prevent further incidents.

Authorities Respond Quickly

At 10 p.m. on November 6, Gia Lai’s Provincial Chairman Phạm Anh Tuấn visited affected areas. He joined the forward command unit to direct rescue work. The chairman ordered local police, military forces, and emergency teams in all 14 storm-response zones to assist residents immediately.

Lâm Đồng Releases Hydropower Water

Further south, Lâm Đồng province began releasing water from several major hydropower reservoirs to prevent overflow. Authorities warned of possible flash floods and landslides in downstream areas.

By early morning, rainfall continued and water levels remained high. Emergency services kept working to reach isolated communities and assess the full extent of Typhoon Kalmaegi’s damage.
