Hoi An Welcomes Back Tourists After Floods | Vietnam’s Resilient Town
In early November, as the floodwaters receded, the ancient town of Hoi An — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — came alive again.
Even though heritage sites remain closed for restoration, international visitors have returned to wander the narrow streets, take photos, and enjoy riverside coffee.
The cobblestone lanes are once more filled with laughter. The aroma of Vietnamese coffee mixes with the scent of wet earth. Lanterns sway gently above the crowd, signaling life’s return to this beloved town.
A Town That Refuses to Stay Down
Late October floods submerged much of the old town under one to two and a half meters of water.
The Japanese Covered Bridge, Hoi An’s famous landmark, was also flooded — higher than in 1999 and 2007.
Yet within days, locals were back at work. They cleaned mud from shopfronts, repainted walls, and reopened small cafés. Everywhere, smiles greeted visitors once more.
“Visitors come not just to see the heritage,” one resident said. “They come to feel the strength and kindness of Hoi An’s people.”
The Enduring Spirit of Hoi An
Hoi An is more than a destination. It’s a place where community and culture survive every challenge.
Photos of residents sweeping streets and repairing homes quickly spread online. Travelers around the world shared them with admiration.
Many posted messages like, “Hoi An looks beautiful again — as if the flood never happened.”
Those images captured the town’s resilience better than words ever could.

A Positive Sign for Vietnam’s Tourism
The return of tourists to Hoi An is a hopeful sign for Vietnam’s tourism recovery.
Experts say it shows the country’s ability to bounce back after natural disasters. It also highlights the hospitality and optimism that make Hoi An special.
For many travelers, visiting Hoi An now is a powerful reminder: beauty and spirit always outlast the storm.
Conclusion
Hoi An has endured countless challenges through the centuries. Yet its heart never fades.
Even after the floods, its lanterns still glow, and its people still smile.
That quiet strength and kindness are what make Hoi An one of the most loved destinations in Vietnam — and in the world.
