From Thang Long to Phu Xuan: Vietnamese Ceramics Exhibition
Celebrating the Shared Cultural Heritage of Hanoi and Hue
On December 18, a special exhibition titled “From Thang Long to Phu Xuan: The Journey of Vietnamese Ceramics” officially opened at the Special National Relic Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam in Hanoi.
The exhibition is jointly organized by the Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities and the Hue City History Museum.
This event is part of a series of activities marking the 65th anniversary of the twinning relationship between Hanoi and Hue (1960–2025). It highlights the long-standing cultural ties between the two historic cities.
A Cultural Journey Through Two Ancient Capitals
The exhibition takes visitors on a cultural journey through Thang Long (Hanoi) and Phu Xuan (Hue). These two cities once served as ancient capitals of Vietnam.
Through ceramics, the exhibition introduces the historical and cultural values of both regions. It explores the development of traditional pottery in each former capital. The display reflects the close connection between history, craftsmanship, and daily life.

Honoring Court and Folk Ceramic Traditions
A key highlight of the exhibition is the dialogue between court culture and folk culture. This is reflected through two famous ceramic traditions.
The exhibition showcases Bat Trang ceramics from Thang Long – Hanoi and Phuoc Tich ceramics from Phu Xuan – Hue. Both pottery traditions have been preserved and passed down through generations.
Each ceramic line represents a unique story of land, people, and time. Together, they demonstrate both tradition and innovation in Vietnamese ceramic art.
Bat Trang Ceramics: A Thousand-Year Heritage
One main section of the exhibition focuses on Bat Trang ceramics, a thousand-year-old heritage of Thang Long – Hanoi.
This section introduces the history and development of Bat Trang pottery village across different dynasties. It highlights the unique formulas, shaping techniques, and firing methods that define Bat Trang ceramics.
These technical and artistic elements helped establish Bat Trang as one of Vietnam’s most renowned ceramic brands. The tradition continues to thrive today.

A Meaningful Cultural Exhibition
The exhibition space is designed as a continuous cultural journey. It allows visitors to see how two ceramic traditions meet and interact.
“From Thang Long to Phu Xuan: The Journey of Vietnamese Ceramics” offers a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s ceramic heritage. It also celebrates the lasting cultural bond between Hanoi and Hue.
