Vietnam’s Main Railway Severed by Typhoon Kalmaegi, Dozens of Trains Disrupted

Heavy rain and landslides disrupt Vietnam’s main rail route through the Central Highlands.

Đắk Lắk, Gia Lai

Typhoon Kalmaegi has cut off Vietnam’s North–South railway after severe erosion damaged the Phước Lãnh–Vân Canh section. The incident occurred late on November 6 as heavy rains battered the Central Highlands provinces of Đắk Lắk and Gia Lai.

Rail Line Washed Out

According to railway officials, about 100 meters of track were washed away near Phước Lãnh–Vân Canh. The erosion reached a depth of nine meters, completely destroying the roadbed and leaving rails suspended in midair. Several other sections also suffered minor landslides, downed trees, and broken signal poles.

As a result, the North–South line remains blocked through the affected area.

Trains Stranded, Services Canceled

Nine passenger trains were forced to stop and wait on both sides of the damaged section. To maintain service, the railway sector plans to transfer passengers between Tuy Hòa station in Đắk Lắk and Diêu Trì station in Gia Lai.

Trains SE21/SE22 (Sài Gòn–Đà Nẵng) and SE5/SE6 (Hà Nội–Sài Gòn), scheduled for November 7, have been canceled. Passengers can return their tickets at any station without a service fee.

Rare November Typhoon Causes Widespread Damage

Typhoon Kalmaegi is an unusually strong storm for November. It made landfall from Quảng Ngãi to Đắk Lắk on the evening of November 6, bringing winds of level 11–13 and gusts up to level 15. The storm caused heavy rain, widespread power outages, and major damage to transport and infrastructure across several provinces.

Railway authorities are working with local forces to assess the damage and restore traffic as soon as weather conditions allow.
