Typhoon Kalmaegi Weakens After Torrential Rain Brings Floods and Damage Across Central Vietnam
The storm loses strength six hours after landfall, leaving floods and casualties in its wake.
Đắk Lắk, Gia Lai
Typhoon Kalmaegi weakened into a tropical depression early on November 7, just six hours after making landfall in central Vietnam. By morning, the system had further dissipated into a low-pressure area as it moved into southern Laos.
Rapid Weakening After Landfall
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Kalmaegi reached the western areas of Quảng Ngãi and Gia Lai at around 1 a.m. The storm’s wind intensity dropped to level 6, with gusts up to level 8. By 4 a.m., the storm’s circulation had weakened completely.
Heavy Rain and Flooding Overnight
During the night, high tides and heavy rain caused flooding in many coastal and lowland communities. Several homes were damaged. Rescue forces were deployed to assist residents and assess damage.
Authorities reported one death in Xuân Lãnh commune, Đắk Lắk, where a house collapsed during the storm. Two people in Gia Lai were injured while reinforcing their homes and moving belongings to safety.

Widespread Rainfall Continues
Meteorologists forecast that rainfall will gradually shift northward on November 7. Areas from southern Quảng Trị to Đà Nẵng and the Central Highlands are expected to receive 20–50 mm of rain, with some areas exceeding 80 mm. Northern provinces from Thanh Hóa to Quảng Trị may see 50–150 mm, and isolated spots could surpass 200 mm.
From the Philippines to Vietnam
Kalmaegi formed from a tropical depression over the central Philippines on November 1. It entered the East Sea on November 5 with wind speeds of level 13, gusting to 16 — becoming Vietnam’s 13th storm of the year.
As the storm moved west-northwest across warm seas with high humidity and no cold-air interference, it strengthened rapidly. By the morning of November 6, Kalmaegi had reached peak intensity at level 15, gusting to 17, about 290 kilometers east of Gia Lai. It made landfall that evening with winds of level 12–13 before quickly weakening inland.
