La Pan Tan – The Golden Rice Terraces of Northwest Vietnam

Where is La Pan Tan?

La Pan Tan (now part of Pung Luong Commune, Lao Cai Province) lies along the famous Khau Pha Pass, one of the “four great mountain passes” of Northwest Vietnam.

This area is home to around 700 hectares of terraced rice fields, making it the largest and most iconic rice terrace landscape in the Mu Cang Chai region. In 2007, it was officially recognized as a National Scenic Heritage Site by Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The Beauty of La Pan Tan Rice Terraces

What makes La Pan Tan truly special is its unique “golden spiral” rice terraces, often called the Golden Tray. The terraces are carved into steep hillsides in perfect layers, forming soft curves that look like waves of rice flowing across the mountains.

From above, the landscape looks like:

  • Giant wooden rings carved into the earth

  • Endless waves of golden rice

  • A living painting shaped by nature and human hands

These spectacular fields are the result of generations of hard work by local ethnic communities.

Beauty in every season

La Pan Tan is beautiful all year round:
