Historic Floods Submerge Hue’s Cultural Heritage Sites
The Ancient Capital of Hue Underwater
On October 28, 2025, heavy rains caused the Huong (Perfume) River to rise to 4.7 meters. That is 1.2 meters above alert level 3.
Meanwhile, the Bo River reached more than 4.8 meters. Large parts of Hue city and its cultural sites were quickly flooded.
The Imperial City of Hue, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is now under nearly 1 meter of water. Many palaces and courtyards are flooded up to 0.3 meters.
The Nghinh Luong Pavilion on the riverbank is also completely submerged.
Many Heritage Sites Heavily Damaged
Almost all sites inside the Hue Citadel are affected by the floods.
-
Quoc Tu Giam (Imperial Academy) and Long An Palace are surrounded by water.
-
Lau Tang Tho (the Royal Archives) is more than 1 meter deep in floodwater.
-
The royal tombs of Gia Long, Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, and Duc Duc are flooded from 1 to 1.7 meters.
-
Other areas are partially flooded, between 0.2 and 0.4 meters, damaging structures and ancient artifacts.

Tourism Suspended to Protect Cultural Heritage
The Hue Monuments Conservation Center has stopped all tourist visits since October 27. This aims to ensure the safety of both visitors and staff.
Teams are on duty around the clock, watching water levels and protecting important relics.
Authorities plan to clean and restore the damaged areas as soon as the floodwater recedes. The goal is to preserve Hue’s heritage for future generations.
Hue Floods 2025: A Call for Heritage Protection
The floods have caused two deaths and missing persons. Nearly 1,760 families have been evacuated.
Beyond the human and material losses, the floods seriously threaten Vietnam’s cultural heritage.
This disaster is a reminder of the urgent need to prepare for climate change and improve heritage protection measures.
