Fansipan Covered in Ice on Christmas Morning

On the morning of December 25, Fansipan – the highest peak in Indochina – was blanketed in a thick layer of ice as temperatures dropped below freezing, creating a rare and magical Christmas surprise for visitors traveling to Sa Pa.

Sub-Zero Temperatures Create the Thickest Ice of the Season

According to Fansipan Legend management, from the night of December 24 through the early hours of December 25, temperatures at the summit hovered between 1–3°C, with some areas dipping close to 0°C. These conditions led to the formation of the thickest ice layer seen so far this winter.

Ice covered walkways, stone steps, rooftops, and the flagpole area at the summit, transforming Fansipan into a sparkling winter landscape rarely seen in Vietnam.

Sunrise Brings a Stunning Transformation

Around 7:30 a.m., the first rays of sunlight appeared, causing the ice to melt slowly and leave behind a thin, shimmering layer across the stone surfaces. Visitors who took the early cable car rides were rewarded with a breathtaking moment as nature transitioned from icy cold to gentle winter warmth atop the “Roof of Indochina.”

This fleeting transformation created a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers.

An Early Winter Brings More Frequent Ice and Snow

This winter arrived earlier than usual, with ice forming more frequently on Fansipan compared to previous years. The Christmas morning ice event was the longest-lasting and most intense since the beginning of the season.

Earlier in December, Fansipan also experienced a brief snowfall lasting about 10 minutes, further highlighting the unusual winter conditions this year.

Christmas Tourism Sees a Significant Boost

The unexpected appearance of ice on Christmas Day significantly increased visitor numbers. Management reported that tourist arrivals rose by around 30% compared to regular days.

Compared to the previous ice event on December 18–19, visitor numbers increased by an additional 5%. Many travelers arrived in Sa Pa days in advance, hoping to witness ice or snow firsthand on Fansipan.

For many visitors, the journey became an unforgettable Christmas gift from nature.

Fansipan: A Unique Winter Destination in Vietnam

The rare sight of ice and occasional snowfall has reinforced Fansipan’s reputation as one of Vietnam’s most unique winter destinations. With a modern cable car system, travelers can easily access alpine-style scenery typically associated with Europe—right in the heart of northern Vietnam.

For those seeking a memorable winter or Christmas travel experience, Fansipan in Sa Pa offers a truly extraordinary adventure.
