Buffalo Racing Festival: Where Sport Meets Khmer Culture in An Giang
The Bay Nui Buffalo Racing Festival is one of the most unique traditional events of the Khmer community in Bay Nui , An Giang. It is more than a sporting competition—it is a cultural celebration that reflects the agricultural lifestyle of local rice farmers. The festival combines sport, tradition, and entertainment. It showcases the unity and hardworking spirit of the community.
When and Why the Festival Takes Place
The festival is held annually during the Sene Dolta festival, from the 29th day of the 8th lunar month to the 1st day of the 9th lunar month. It is not just a race. It also symbolizes the community’s hope for a bountiful harvest. The event demonstrates solidarity, diligence, and cultural pride.

Venues and Festival Setup
The buffalo race tracks are on flat rectangular fields. Trenches are dug about 10 cm deep and filled with 5–10 cm of water. This creates a slippery, muddy track. Main venues are in Tri Tôn and Tinh Bien districts. The track at Tri Tôn Commune, inside the Ta Pa – Soai Chek Sports and Tourism Complex, is a key site.
Buffalo pairs are carefully selected and trained. The famous Bảy Núi buffalo breed is used. Competitions follow a knockout format, where racers guide buffalo pairs through muddy tracks. This makes each race exciting and suspenseful.
Festival Atmosphere
The festival is lively and colorful. Visitors enjoy drums, flags, and traditional performances. It is a time for locals and tourists to experience the unique culture of Bay Nui .
On January 19, 2016, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism recognized the Bay Nui Buffalo Racing Festival as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. This honors its historical and cultural significance. It also helps preserve the festival for future generations.

A Highlight of Tourism and Community Life
Local authorities organize the festival professionally each year. They maintain race tracks, support racing teams, and promote the festival widely. The event is a unique tourism attraction. It boosts the local economy and draws thousands of visitors.
The festival now includes participants beyond the Khmer community. People from different ethnic groups, provinces of the Mekong Delta, and even Cambodia join the races. This shows the festival’s strong community spirit. It fosters social bonds, cultural exchange, and shared joy.
